Ministry of Industry and Trade downplays Egypt rice exports decision |

The Jordan Times 30/3/2008: The Ministry of Industry and Trade on Saturday said the Kingdom’s reservoir of rice is sufficient to meet the local market demand for more than six months. In a statement issued today, the ministry said a decision by Egypt to prevent rice exports will not affect Jordan, particularly with a sufficient quantity of rice in the local market at stable and appropriate prices. Jordan imports rice from various origins, not from one state, hence any decision by any of these countries to avoid exporting rice will not cause a shortage in the local market, the statement said. Parallel markets and the commercial sector are capable of meeting the market’s demand for a long duration, in addition to the rice quantities enroute to the Kingdom based on signed contracts, the ministry added. |
